Big Brothers Big Sisters of Acadiana, Inc.

Who We Are

The mission of Big Brothers Big Sisters of Acadiana is to provide children facing adversity with strong and enduring, professionally supported one-to-one relationships that change their lives for the better, forever. The agency was established in Lafayette Parish in 1985 and expanded services to St. Landry and Evangeline Parishes in 2004. We are part of a nationwide network of over 350 BBBS agencies across the country and serve approximately 300 children per year in our Community-based and School-based Mentoring Programs.

What We Do

Big Brothers Big Sisters of Acadiana enrolls children ages 6-13, most of whom are from single-parent and female-headed households, with volunteer mentors who are screened and trained by the agency. Children are referred by parents, teachers/counselors, and other youth-serving organizations. Both parents and potential volunteers attend an agency orientation where program information is provided and volunteers are given guidelines and screening requirements.

Volunteers in the Community-based Program are asked to provide a valid driver's license and adequate vehicle insurance, list 3 references who will be contacted by agency staff, undergo a nationwide criminal background check and a sex offender registry check, attend a one-on-one interview with agency staff, and allow a staff person to visit their home to assure that there are no safety issues. Matches in the Community-based Program meet a minimum of twice a month and spend time at the local library, parks, and community events. Low to no cost activities are stressed as the emphasis for these matches is on building a relationship.

In the School-based Program, volunteers also undergo a criminal background and sex offender registry check, provide 3 references, and attend a one-on-one interview with an agency case manager. They meet at their Littles' schools 3-4 times per month for approximately 45 minutes and spend time in the school library, in the cafeteria, or on the school grounds.

Both programs urge consistency in match meetings and case managers contact the parent, child, and volunteer once a month in the Community-based Program and the child and volunteer monthly in the School-based Program to see how the match relationship is progressing. Teachers and/or counselors are also contacted regularly to gauge the impact of the match in the child's life. Surveys are conducted for all program participants once or twice a year to measure outcomes for the matched Little.
